July 17, 2018
The Board of Trustees of LTCC is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Jonathan King as the college’s new Vice President of Student Services beginning August 6. Dr. King is currently the Dean of Counseling and Student Support Programs at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, CA, where he has served since January 2015.
LTCC Superintendent/President Jeff DeFranco said, “Dr. King brings 25 years of administrative and instructional experience with colleges and educational institutions, large and small, rural and urban, private and public, within the California Community College system and in Colorado and Texas. His work has been comprehensive, including managing the various aspects of a community college such as instruction, continuing education, student services, administration, institutional effectiveness, and community development. This broad-based skill set will permit Dr. King to join our administrative team and hit the ground running.
“Jonathan has proven himself to be a creative, innovative administrator, educator and leader. While at Southwestern College, he developed student success initiatives through partnerships with local high schools and middle schools to support African-American and Latino males, with 100 percent completion rates. At Evergreen Valley College, he oversaw their Accelerated Degree Program in conjunction with the City of San Jose and was awarded the Cal Woman Tech Award for increasing female enrollment in high tech programs at Evergreen Valley College.”
Continuing, Mr. DeFranco noted, “Having lived in Canada and Japan and having worked extensively with African American, Latina/o, Native American, First Nations, and veteran students, Dr. King’s global perspective will assist in enhancing our campus culture and helping our students succeed in their quest to complete their work with LTCC, move into the employment world or to pursue further academic goals.”
Dr. King said, “I am very excited about the opportunity of working for Lake Tahoe Community College, which has an outstanding reputation for meeting the diverse needs of its students, and the community at large. I am honored to serve as the Vice President of Student Services and look forward to building on our successes and working collaboratively to accelerate student success.”
Dr. King earned his doctorate degree in educational leadership from the University of Texas at Austin, his Masters’ degree from the Harvard School of Education in Educational Administration, and his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. He also earned a Master’s in International Relations from the International University of Japan.
The King family includes Jonathan’s wife, Esther, who is a nurse, and two sons – Kamal, who just graduated from high school, and Shoghi, who will be a high school junior this fall. They will fit right into the Tahoe lifestyle, as they enjoy outdoor sports, music and travel.
