Registration
First: Apply or update your application with OpenCCC, the California Community College system. There is a link to OpenCCC on the ISSI home page.
Second: Once your application is processed, LTCC will send you an email with your LTCC Self-Service username, password, and student ID. (Please note, it may take up to 72 hours (about 3 days) for this information to emailed to you.) Once you receive your student ID, you will go to the main LTCC website to register for the classes.
Yes; the last page, after you pay your fees, serves as confirmation that you are enrolled in ISSI.
Students may register, drop, waitlist, and search for courses within their LTCC student portal (Ellucian Experience). The portal provides students with information and services that they will use during their educational journey at Lake Tahoe Community College.
If you are still uncertain, you can call Enrollment Services (1-530-541-4660 x 211), who can look it up for you. If they do not answer your call, please leave a message and they will call you back.
Yes! If you want to drop a class before July 29th, please use LTCC Ellucian Experience. Once ISSI has started, students will only be able to drop courses using LTCC Ellucian Experience before 4pm on Monday, July 29, 2024. No changes can be made after that—No exceptions.
Yes! High-school-aged students who wish to enroll in ISSI need to do the following:
- Complete the application process through our website. If you have enrolled in classes at LTCC in the past, you do not need to apply again.
- Complete the High School Placement form (HS Counselor signature, LTCC Counselor signature, and Transcripts NOT REQUIRED). Please be specific about what class(es) you want to enroll in on the form.
- Email the completed form to enrollmentservices@ltcc.edu from your LTCC email address.
Payment: When registering into 11 or less units, tuition should not be charged. There is a $2.00 Student Representation fee that students may pay or opt-out of. ISSI courses do have a materials fee, which you will need to pay for within your portal or in-person with Enrollment Services.
No, California Community College regulations state that credit classes are not repeatable. You can take any class that you have not previously taken, either at a lower or higher level. An exception is for those enrolled in the High Superior level as that curriculum is changed every year.
You can look that information up on Ellucian Experience (formerly Passport). You will need your LTCC login information to gain entry. Access “Student Quick Links” panel from dashboard and select "Self Service". View far-left column, select “Academics” icon and click on desired link (i.e. Unofficial Transcripts, Order Official Transcripts, etc.).
Registration will open May 25, 2024, at which point you can register for ISSI courses. Registration will close on Monday, July 29th at 4:00 PM.
If a course is full, add yourself to the waitlist. If a seat opens, the first person on the waitlist will be notified through his or her LTCC email account. Check your LTCC email often for notifications.
Alternatively, you can take the next course above or below the level you want, provided you haven't taken it already. (Each course is a partial step up from the previous course, so the jump isn't that high.)
ISSI Programming
There is more information about our overall schedule on the A Typical Day at ISSI webpage. This will show you what to expect but has only general information.
As we get closer to ISSI, all registered students will be mailed a tentative breakout schedule with descriptions of the proposed sessions. Note that this will be current as of print, and that there will be changes to offerings and locations.
New this year, students will have access to the ISSI 2024 Canvas page. This will show you up-to-date breakout schedules, links to various ISSI events, and much more. You will gain access to the Canvas page the day before ISSI starts, and more.
The courses of 2.5 quarter units are transferable to the CSUs. At Lake Tahoe Community College these are considered electives. Always check with your school to see if these courses are accepted; we cannot tell you what your college accepts.
Technically yes, you may register for only mini-courses and take more than one. Be aware that you will not have access to the core (grammar) courses nor the breakout sessions, only to your mini-course(s).
Yes, all classes have a limit of 25-27 students. If you end up on a waitlist for a course, please watch your LTCC email daily, as there will be a short window that you can fully enroll in the course.
Part of your registration is a $42 materials fee that includes your materials. You will receive your Curriculum Booklet in your classroom, and instructors will have a limited number of paper copies of whatever materials that they will be using in their courses and breakout sessions.
ISSI is moving to a more digital presence. All core and mini-courses will have a landing page (called a ‘shell') where instructors will house their course materials. Additionally, there will be a general ISSI 2024 shell that houses updated breakout schedules, breakout materials, and more. You access the Canvas shell for your course on the LTCC website after you log in to Passport. Your Canvas shell is available about one hour before your class starts.
No, we don't offer this, since ISSI is an academic program. Instead, your LTCC transcript will be the evidence of having completed the required credits. Your ISSI work will show up on your LTCC transcript will be ready in October.
Placement into ISSI Courses
On the ISSI Core Courses (Self-Placement) webpage, you'll see information on what is covered in each core (grammar) course. You'll also see that there are quizzes for most all the grammar elements.
If you have never studied Spanish before, you should enroll in SPA 121A, Low Beginning Spanish. This is our entry-level course.
If you have taken some Spanish in the past, then you will need to determine which course is your best fit. To place yourself:
- Read the descriptions of the levels.
- Aim for the level that best represents the last grammar instruction that you have had in the past. (If you have ‘picked up Spanish’ by talking to Spanish-speaking people, then aim for what sounds most like what you know.)
- Take the self-placement quizzes for the grammar level that you think might best fit
your knowledge.
- If you get 80% or higher on most of the self-placement quizzes, then consider going one level higher.
- If you get 40-80% on most of the self-placement quizzes, then consider taking that level.
- If you consistently get less than 40% on most of the quizzes, or the quizzes cover material that you don't know at all, then consider going one or more levels lower.
If you have further questions about placement, please contact Dr. Sarah Harmon, ISSI Academic Coordinator: sharmon@mail.ltcc.edu.
The Pre-ISSI course, SPA 182A, is an online class scheduled from July 8th through July 19th. It's a great way for students to prepare for ISSI. We encourage anyone who is new to ISSI to sign up for the course.
For California residents, the cost is approximately $77.50, plus fees. If you have questions, please contact the instructor, Esther Gormley, at emgormley@mail.ltcc.edu for more information about the course and the waitlist.
