Common Course Numbering

What is Common Course Numbering (CCN) and Why is it Being Implemented?

The Common Course Numbering (CCN) system is a statewide initiative designed to simplify and align course identification across all California Community Colleges, as well as with transfer partners such as the University of California (UC), California State University (CSU), and the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU). Mandated by Assembly Bill 1111 (Berman, 2021), CCN ensures that general education and transfer pathway courses share consistent, student-friendly numbering, making it easier for students to understand how their coursework transfers between institutions. By providing a clear and uniform course catalog, CCN empowers students to build cohesive academic plans, avoid duplicative coursework, and progress efficiently toward degree completion. Developed through collaborative efforts among faculty, statewide committees, and intersegmental workgroups, the CCN system supports equity in higher education by maximizing credit mobility and streamlining transfer pathways. The new common course numbers make it easier for students to plan their classes, transfer smoothly between colleges, and avoid retaking courses they've already completed.
Courses that are part of the Common Course Numbering (CCN) system will include a "C" in the course number, like ENGLC1000 or STATC1000, and will be clearly listed in the college catalog and schedule. You’ll also see updated course codes on your registration portal starting Fall 2025.
Yes — courses with common course numbers are designed to maintain their transferability. They will continue to meet transfer requirements for CSU, UC, and participating private universities, helping students stay on track toward their degrees without disruption.
