Fire Science is an Accredited Regional Training Program through the California State Fire Marshal and the State Board of Fire Services

The Fire Science program at LTCC is designed to give students the required knowledge to pursue entry-level municipal or wildland fire service careers. Students will gain a broad working knowledge of the many aspects of fire service organization and operations, proper use of fire equipment, tactics and strategies of fire fighting, specialized job skills, and management techniques. The Fire Science program emphasizes critical thinking skills in the examination and analysis of modern fire service issues and the strengthening of effective written and oral communication skills.

Student Learning Outcomes for the Fire Science program are:

  • Identify minimum qualifications and entry-level skills for firefighter hiring.

  • Analyze, appraise and evaluate fire and emergency incidents and identify components of emergency management and firefighter safety.

  • Comprehend laws, regulations, codes and standards that influence fire department operations, and identify regulatory and advisory organizations that create and mandate them, especially in the areas of fire prevention, building codes and ordinances, and firefighter health and safety.

  • Analyze the causes of fire, determine extinguishing agents and methods, differentiate the stages of the fire and fire development, and compare methods of heat transfer.

  • Identify and describe common types of building construction and conditions associated with structural collapse and firefighter safety.

  • Differentiate between fire detection and fire suppression systems.

The Fire Science program culminates in an Associate degree (90 units) or Certificates of Achievement in Fire Science (31.5 - 32 units) or Firefighter I (43.5 units).  The Certificates of Achievement are considered "stepping stones" into a volunteer fire service position and allow students to thoroughly explore the career options before committing to an Associate degree program.  Click here on LTCC Catalog for descriptions of the course requirements for completing the AA degree or the certificates of achievement.

Students can expect to complete the Fire Science degree or certificate in two years.  Click on Two Year Schedule of Course Offerings to see when the courses will be offered.

Check the LTCC schedule for further information on Fire Science courses being offered this quarter.

Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy

Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy FAQs

The Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy is offered through a partnership with Lake Valley Fire Protection District, South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, and Tahoe-Douglas Fire Protection District and is comprised of a three-part sequence that meets the requirements of the California State Fire Marshal’s curriculum for Firefighter I certification. LTCC is a Regionally Accredited Program through the California State Fire Marshal’s Office.  Upon successful completion of the fire academy and one year of agency affiliation, students will be eligible to apply with the California State Fire Marshal for official Firefighter I certification.  A certificate of achievement is awarded to students successfully completing both the fire academy courses and EMT certification.

The fire academy is offered in an extended format over three quarters (fall-winter-spring).  Students attend classes on Saturdays and Mondays (8 a.m. – 4:50 p.m.).  Our curriculum includes specialized training in ice rescue, high angle rescue, job interviewing skills and career development, as well as sexual harassment awareness and prevention training.

Attendance at a mandatory orientation in August must precede registration.  Please see the summer schedule for information about this meeting or contact Leona Allen, Fire Academy Coordinator, at allenl@ltcc.edu.

This is an extremely physically demanding program.  A physician’s clearance is required for participation.

Students will receive invoices in class to cover the cost of successful completion of individual certifications through the State Fire Marshal’s Office and National Wildfire Coordinating Group.

For further information on the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy, please contact the Fire Academy Coordinator, Leona Allen, at allenl@ltcc.edu or (530) 541-4660, ext. 554.
